Whether you're switching to Boost from another carrier or just looking for a new customer discount, we make it easy to connect your phone and start saving right away. Here's everything you need to know about bringing your own device to a Boost plan.

What Does Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Mean?

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) means you can switch to a new carrier, like Boost Mobile, while keeping your existing phone instead of emptying your wallet to buy a new device. This can be a great option for those who want to take advantage of better, more affordable plans while keeping the phone you love.

If you’re ready to get started, follow our simple BYOD guide below.

Bring Your Phone to Boost in 5 Easy Steps

Step 1: Check Your Phones Compatibility

Before switching, confirm your phone is unlocked and works with Boost Mobile's network. The fastest way to check is by using Boost Mobile's IMEI compatibility tool, which instantly tells you if your device is eligible. An unlocked and compatible phone is required to activate a plan, ensuring a smooth transition when you bring your own device.

Tip: Find Your Phone’s IMEI Number

Your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 15-digit number that identifies your device. You'll need it to verify compatibility with Boost Mobile.

  • Dial Method: On your phone, dial *#06# to instantly display your IMEI

  • iPhone Settings: Go to Settings > General > About, then scroll to find “IMEI”

  • Android Settings: Open Settings > About Phone > Status > IMEI Information

  • On the Box: If you still have your phone’s original box, the IMEI is usually printed on the label

Step 2: Check if Your Phone is Unlocked

To bring your phone to Boost Mobile, it must be unlocked. A locked phone will only work with your current carrier, while an unlocked phone gives you the freedom to switch and take advantage of Boost Mobile's affordable plans and BYOD deals.

If your phone is still locked, you'll need to contact your carrier and request an unlock. Most carriers unlock devices once they're paid off or after a certain time period on your contract.

Here’s how to quickly check if your phone is unlocked:

Paso 3: elige tu plan de Boost Mobile

All of the Unlimited plan options we offer at Boost Mobile give you the ability to bring your current device. You simply need to decide what features you're looking for, how much premium data you'll need and what price point works best for you.

Step 4: Transfer Your Number

One of the best parts of switching to Boost Mobile is that you can keep your existing phone number. This process is called a "number transfer" or "porting."

Important: Do not cancel your old service before starting the transfer. Your account must remain active for the number transfer to go through successfully. Once your number is fully activated on Boost Mobile, your old carrier will automatically cancel your previous line of service.

To transfer your number, you’ll need the following port-out information from your current carrier:

  • Account Number – This can usually be found on your bill or account dashboard.

  • PIN or Port-Out Password – Some carriers require a special code to approve the transfer.

  • Billing Address – Must match the address on file with your current carrier.

When you're ready, Boost Mobile will handle the transfer for you during activation. Most transfers are complete within minutes, but in some cases this may take longer.

Step 5: Activate Your Device

To get started, make sure you have your Transfer PIN ready if you’re keeping your current number. Turn on your phone and connect to Wi-Fi, then either install the Boost Mobile app or follow our activation steps. From there, create a new account or log in to your existing account and follow the step-by-step activation instructions.

If you received a SIM kit, you'll also need your ICCID number, which can be found on the back of your SIM card. This ensures your device is correctly recognized by our network and helps maintain a smooth activation process.

Now, install your SIM

For eSIM:

  • Follow the activation flow in your Boost app or through our website to download and accept the eSIM on your phone.

For Physical SIM:

  • Turn off your device.

  • Identify your SIM card size by checking the tray.

  • Insert the SIM into the tray, then place it back into your phone.

  • Turn your device back on and complete the activation process.

It’s that easy! You should be all set up on your new BYOD Boost Mobile plan. If you still need help, call our Boost Care Experts at (866) 957-8278 or chat with customer support online

BYOD FAQs

Yes, your phone will need to be unlocked before you can bring your phone to a new carrier. A locked device is restricted to your current provider, so it won’t connect properly to another network until it’s unlocked.

If your phone is already unlocked, you can typically bring it to a new network right away. If it's locked, you'll need to follow your current carrier's unlocking process first.

IMEI numbers are like a phone's fingerprint, each device has its own unique 15-digit code. Boost Mobile uses this number to quickly verify whether your phone can connect to our network, support the right frequencies, and work smoothly with our services.
